Winter Driving Tips
Driving in winter conditions, particularly on snow and ice, is a skill like any other which can be learned and practised but is often attempted by the inexperienced. If you are planning to hire a car for a winter sports holiday, it might be a good idea to seek some advice before you go.
Some basic points to consider are...
- When booking your hire car, choose deals including winter tyres if available. Some countries have laws requiring their use in the winter months in which case they will be fitted to all hire cars though you may still have to pay extra for them.
- Do you know your route? If you’re going somewhere for the first time, check out both your preferred route and any alternatives as conditions can change very quickly in poor weather. Main routes are usually kept reasonably clear except in unusual circumstances.
- Allow plenty of time for your journey and try to choose flights which allow you to complete it in daylight if possible. A night in an airport hotel might be a cheap price to pay for a safer, more relaxed journey.
- Check the latest weather forecast and try to tune the radio in to a local station with travel bulletins.
- It goes without saying but please drive more slowly than you might normally. You don’t have to drive at the speed limit – you are allowed to go slower!
- Be aware that, even with snow tyres, stopping distances will be increased so leave extra space between you and the car in front.
- Be especially aware of your speed when approaching junctions, navigating roundabouts and cornering.
- Use dipped headlights.
- Stop frequently on long journeys. Winter driving requires a great deal of concentration and can be more tiring than you expect. Local roadside halts will be able to advise on local problems and a hot drink is always welcome!
- Keep your fuel topped up as it may be necessary to take a longer route or even turn back if conditions become severe.
- When you stop, clear any snow off lights, windows and mirrors.
- Only use snow chains when conditions require them.
